140 temporary shelters sent to earthquake-hit Haiti
Canadian supplier of redeployable shelter systems Weatherhaven, have furnished 140 (350-square-foot) aluminum framed structures with fabric covers, for UN Agencies and NGOs helping with relief efforts in the earthquake-ravaged country.
Originally for the Australian military to be used as field hospitals, they are also ideal for use as offices or accommodation but will most likely be used in Haiti as portable clinics.
Easily assembled in just half an hour, these robust arched-shaped shelters were transported to the Dominican Republic and then on to Haiti by road because of congestion at the Port-au-Prince airport.
Supplied and transported at cost by Weatherhaven and their usual transportation company Perishables in Richmond, the 140 shelter units were surplus supplies which fortunately happened to be available when the earthquake struck.
The shelters have been used for relief in disasters such as the Sumatra earthquake and in Afghanistan.
